President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed AIG Olatunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), a move described by security advocates as a definitive step toward professionalising the nation’s internal security.
The appointment, announced on February 26, 2026, has been met with widespread acclaim from civil society groups who view Disu as a bridge-builder between the Force and the Nigerian public.
In a press statement issued in Lagos, made available to securitynewsalert.com, the #Prayer & Support 4 The Nigerian Armed Forces & Other Security Agencies group celebrated the transition, noting that Disu’s elevation to the pinnacle of his career marks a “well-deserved” recognition of his disciplined leadership and unwavering dedication to national service.
The Convener of the Association, Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, characterised the appointment as a testament to Disu’s unique approach to law enforcement.
Fatile pointed to Disu’s track record of building genuine relationships with citizens, specifically recalling his tenure as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos.
“This was powerfully evident during the EndSARS protests,” Fatile noted. “The reaction of both the public and the media reflected the deep confidence Nigerians have in him. He has always been prompt, reliable, and ready to assist whenever called upon.”
The Association highlighted Disu’s career trajectory as a roadmap of operational and administrative excellence. His resume includes high-pressure roles, such as serving as the Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he led complex and sensitive operations with precision.
As Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the FCT, he was noted for managing crises and maintaining order in volatile environments. Most recently, as AIG of the FCID Annex, Alagbon, he worked to elevate investigative standards and institutional discipline.
“IGP Disu’s career reflects a rare blend of operational excellence and strategic leadership,” the statement read, noting that his recent elevation from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) highlights his readiness for the top job.
With Nigeria facing an evolving security landscape, the Association believes Disu is uniquely positioned to correct longstanding misconceptions about the Nigerian Police Force.
“Nigerians are optimistic that with him at the helm, there will be a positive shift in public perception,” Fatile stated. “We believe he will strengthen intelligence-led policing, deepen inter-agency collaboration, and integrate modern technology into crime prevention.”
The group further emphasised that the new IGP’s focus on officer welfare and the rule of law would be essential in fostering a more accountable and citizen-focused institution.
As Disu takes the reins, the #Prayer & Support group has pledged its full backing, envisioning a tenure defined by transformative progress.
“With his discipline, operational acumen, and reform-driven approach, IGP Disu inspires hope for renewed public trust and strengthened national security,” Fatile concluded.
