The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the absolute readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee a peaceful, secure, free, and credible electoral process across Ekiti State ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
Speaking on Thursday at the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and Peace Accord signing ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, the police boss assured the public that comprehensive security measures have been finalised to protect the integrity of the vote.
The high-profile event drew key electoral and political stakeholders, including officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Peace Committee, which is led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Also in attendance were political party leaders, governorship candidates, traditional rulers, civil society groups, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic and observer communities.
During his address, IGP Disu praised INEC and the National Peace Committee for their unwavering dedication to fostering peaceful democratic participation and boosting public confidence in the electoral system.
“I want to particularly acknowledge the leadership of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, for his continued commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability,” the IGP stated.
The police chief disclosed that meticulous security planning has already been completed to cover every corner of the state during the polls.
“Comprehensive deployment plans and operational strategies have been concluded for all sixteen Local Government Areas, one hundred and fifty-four wards, and over two thousand four hundred polling units in the State,” Disu announced. “Personnel and operational assets are strategically positioned to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and all participants in the electoral process.”
Working in tandem with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), the IGP pledged that law enforcement would maintain the highest standards of integrity.
“The Nigeria Police Force will remain professional and impartial throughout the election period,” Disu emphasised.
He concluded by calling on political actors to respect the commitments they made at the forum and urged the electorate to turn out in large numbers.
“I urge all political stakeholders to uphold the Peace Accord and conduct their activities peacefully. I also encourage the residents of Ekiti State to freely exercise their constitutional rights without fear, as we assure them of adequate security before, during, and after the election,” Disu said.
In a statement releasing the briefing details on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains fiercely committed to the protection of democratic values, the maintenance of public order, and the peaceful conduct of elections nationwide.
