The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) on Thursday opened its first-ever Annual National Convention, a three-day event held at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja, under the theme “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose, and Grace.”
The convention, described as the association’s maiden annual general gathering, was formally declared open by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, who was represented at the event.
Among the dignitaries present were the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Riliwan Disu, members of the Force Management Team; past POWA National Presidents; and the association’s sitting National President, Mrs Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu.
Solidarity delegations also attended, including the National President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Mernan Femi Oluyede; the National President of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA), Mrs Aisha Is Abbas; and the National President of the Fire Officers’ Wives Association (FOWA), Mrs Olufunke Olumode, alongside numerous POWA members, including wives of senior police officers from across the federation.
In her opening remarks, POWA National President Mrs Olufunmilolala Mutiat Disu described the convention as “a gathering of women whose stories are rarely told, whose sacrifices are often unseen, yet whose strength quietly keeps the Nigeria Police Force standing.”
She noted that the convention marks the culmination of the association’s recent unannounced welfare outreach visits across the Federal Capital Territory, aimed at strengthening and empowering officers’ wives directly within their barracks.
Delivering his address, IGP Disu commended the foresight and dedication of the POWA leadership, praising the recent welfare outreaches as reflective of “the finest values of empathy, kindness, and selfless service.”
He stressed the indispensable role officers’ wives play in supporting and shaping the men behind the uniform, urging them to continue upholding integrity, discipline, humility, and compassion as hallmarks of the association.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of personnel and their families, pledging continued support for sustainable initiatives promoting family welfare, education, healthcare, skills acquisition, and socioeconomic empowerment.
