IGP Disu Highlights Police Reforms, Community Protection Efforts at US-Nigeria Security Meeting

-

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen community protection, professional policing and counter-crime operations during the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern (CPC) Joint Working Group meeting held in Washington, D.C.

The meeting, held on August 12, 2026, reviewed progress on the implementation of the Joint Working Group Roadmap for the April to June 2026 reporting period and explored areas for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP represented the Nigeria Police Force as part of the Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser and comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defence, Service Chiefs, and heads of other security and law enforcement agencies.

Presenting the Force’s contributions to the roadmap, Disu outlined several initiatives aimed at improving public safety and tackling insecurity across the country.

The IGP said the Nigeria Police Force had sustained “counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, strengthened Police presence in vulnerable communities, early-warning mechanisms and measures supporting the protection and safe return of Internally Displaced Persons.”

He disclosed that personnel from specialised police formations had been deployed across vulnerable Local Government Areas during the reporting period to reinforce public safety and deter violent extremist and criminal groups.

On police reforms, Disu revealed that the recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables had advanced to the final pre-training stage.

He said, “The recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables is advancing towards the final pre-training stage, with preparations underway for comprehensive training based on an improved curriculum and international best practices.”

The police chief also underscored the importance of community engagement in addressing security challenges, noting that the Force had strengthened collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders.

He stressed that “public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence” remain critical to achieving sustainable security nationwide.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism, the IGP said the Nigeria Police Force would continue to uphold lawful investigations, civilian protection, human rights and due process while supporting Nigeria’s broader counterterrorism and criminal justice framework.

He further pledged the Force’s continued commitment to implementing the Joint Working Group Roadmap through “professional policing, community protection, strengthened investigative capacity and support for Nigeria’s broader security and rule-of-law objectives.
