The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assumed leadership of the Board of Police Health Maintenance Limited (PHML) as part of efforts to strengthen medical welfare for police personnel.
Disu was inaugurated as Chairman of the PHML Board on Tuesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja during a visit by the agency’s leadership team.
The delegation was led by retired Deputy Inspector-General, Aminu Yesufu, and included retired Assistant Inspector-General Adenike Abuwa; Independent Director Otive Iguzor; PHML Managing Director, Yusuf Kalli Gazali; and Force Medical Director, Nkechi Eze.
Speaking during the meeting, PHML leadership reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery for officers, citing recent upgrades to police hospitals in Akure, Sokoto, Bambam, Yola and Lagos.
They also disclosed that the organisation had secured partnerships with federal tertiary hospitals to provide immediate and free treatment for officers with gunshot wounds and trauma-related injuries. In addition, a collaboration with Zenith Healthcare Limited will expand access to specialised renal care for personnel with chronic conditions.
In his remarks, Disu described the health of officers as a critical component of national security, urging PHML to prioritise the welfare of rank-and-file personnel over administrative targets.
“The health of our officers must remain central to all medical planning. Those on the front lines deserve timely and quality care,” he said.
The police chief also highlighted ongoing challenges, including gaps in insurance coverage for retired officers and the need to rehabilitate healthcare facilities in police barracks nationwide.
He reiterated his commitment to building a resilient police force, noting that effective policing depends largely on the physical and mental well-being of personnel.
The visit signals renewed focus on strengthening healthcare systems within the Nigeria Police Force. #Securitynewsalert.com
