The Abia State Police has officially confirmed the attack that occurred on Tuesday, where two of their personnel lost their lives in an attack on Governor Alex Otti’s commissioner for trade, commerce, and investment, Chimezie Ukaegbu’s convoy.

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka, while confirming the incident, said that the convoy was attacked by gunmen at Sameck Junction, a location that connects Ariaria International Market, Faulks Road, and the Old Express Road.

According to her, during the attack, an inspector and a constable were killed, and several others sustained bullet wounds, leading to widespread panic among the people who sought refuge in shops and houses until late in the evening on Tuesday.

In response to the distressing incident, the police returned early Wednesday morning to arrest some individuals and restore order in the area.

Chinaka explained that the attack took place around 4:PM on July 7, while the commissioner was on a familiarization tour of markets in Aba metropolis, heading to Ekeoha Shopping Plaza when the assailants struck.

Among the casualties were a police constable who was part of the security convoy and a police inspector who was on a separate assignment with a police Hilux vehicle.

In addition to the loss of lives, the hoodlums also set a vehicle belonging to the Ministry for Trade, Commerce, and Investment on fire.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the state, and authorities are actively investigating the attack to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.”
