The Kebbi State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 50-year-old man in connection with a case of culpable homicide in the Bena district of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area. The arrest led to the recovery of two rifles, ammunition, a magazine, and a cutlass.
The incident occurred on October 16, 2025, around 6:00 PM. The victim, identified as Alhaji Babuga Muhammad, was travelling from Bena town to his village, Karaye, in Zamfara State. According to the police press release, a gang of hoodlums intercepted him near a forest by Malakachi village, took him into the woods, and matched him on his neck.
Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Bena mobilised a team to the scene. They evacuated the victim to the General Hospital in Bena, where a medical practitioner confirmed him dead.
Following the initial investigation, Muhammad Wanzam of Bena town was arrested as a primary suspect. During interrogation, Wanzam reportedly confessed to conspiring with one Nuhu Bena, who is currently at large, and using a cutlass to attack the deceased “without any reasonable cause.”
A subsequent search of Wanzam’s residence yielded several exhibits: One fabricated AK-47 rifle, one Dane gun, two live ammunition, one magazine and the cutlass allegedly used in the crime.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Bello M Sani commended the DPO and his team for their “professionalism and intelligence-driven policing strategy” in making the arrest. The CP has since directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi for further investigation. The goal is to apprehend the fleeing suspect and “unravel their modus operandi.”
CP Sani also took the opportunity to urge members of the public to seek redress from appropriate authorities when aggrieved, rather than resorting to self-help.
Reiterating the Command’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Kebbi residents, CP Sani appealed to the community to continue supporting police operations by reporting any suspicious movements to the nearest security agency for a swift response.
