A mother and her son narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning after a Lexus sport utility vehicle overturned several times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the busy LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement sighted by securitynewsalert.com, confirmed that the lone accident occurred during the early hours of the day, involving a Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT travelling from Isheri towards Igando.
According to preliminary assessments, the vehicle suddenly lost stability while in motion and somersaulted three times before coming to a stop amid heavy traffic typical of the peak morning period on the corridor.
LASTMA officials said operatives stationed within the area responded swiftly to the scene and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.
“The occupants, a mother and her son, were successfully extricated from the severely damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild physiological trauma, narrowly averting what could have resulted in a fatal catastrophe,” the agency stated.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Igando Division also provided security at the scene, managing the crowd and ensuring order during the rescue and evacuation efforts.
Family members of the victims reportedly arrived shortly after being notified and took the injured mother and son for further medical evaluation and treatment.
To prevent further accidents and reduce traffic congestion along the busy route serving the Lagos State University axis, LASTMA officials coordinated the removal of the damaged vehicle with support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The vehicle was later handed over to the police for investigation and administrative procedures.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no lives were lost.
“We are grateful that this incident did not result in loss of life,” Bakare-Oki said, wishing the victims a speedy recovery while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to prompt emergency response and effective traffic management.
He also urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and carry out routine checks on their vehicles before embarking on trips.
“Excessive speed, especially when combined with mechanical deficiencies such as faulty braking systems, remains a major cause of serious road crashes on our expressways,” he warned.
