Nigeria Police Council Endorses Tunji Disu as Inspector-General, Swearing-In Set for Wednesday

-

The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police, clearing the way for his swearing-in by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday.

A State House statement issued on Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, seen by securitynewsalert.com, said the swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.

The council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was presided over by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other senior government officials present included Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

Tinubu appointed Disu following the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

Speaking after the council’s endorsement, Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the incoming police chief’s track record, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State between 2015 and 2021.
“His tenure earned him and the RRS recognition for excellence in crime control,” the governor said.

Similarly, Abdullahi Sule described the appointment as merit-based, saying it was grounded in Disu’s “excellent career record.”

Wike also commended the new police chief, highlighting his previous service in Rivers State.
“He served as Assistant Commissioner, Criminal Investigation Department, and Officer-in-charge of the anti-kidnapping unit in Rivers between 2014 and 2015,” Wike said. “He demonstrated professionalism and efficiency as a crime fighter.”

According to the statement, Peter Mbah moved the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment during the meeting.

Disu, born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he has held several operational, investigative and strategic command roles across the country.

Before his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

He is also credited with obtaining multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology and entrepreneurship, reflecting what the statement described as a commitment to modern policing.
