…For More Efforts to Free Other Victims in Captivity
Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued a retired senior military officer, Colonel Ajanaku (rtd), who was abducted by gunmen from his residence in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The rescue operation, carried out after days of coordinated efforts, led to the safe release of the retired officer, bringing relief to his family and colleagues. Details of the operation were not immediately disclosed, but the Army has been commended for the successful outcome.
The development has attracted widespread public reactions, with many Nigerians praising the troops for their professionalism and courage. Some social media users described the rescue as “commendable,” urging security agencies to sustain the momentum in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
However, the rescue has also reignited calls for intensified efforts to free other victims still in captivity. One commentator appealed to the military and other security agencies to assist in rescuing Mrs. Sarah Achi and her daughter, who have reportedly been held by abductors since October 28.
According to the appeal, Mrs. Achi’s husband was later murdered by the kidnappers, leaving behind two other children under the age of four.
While many congratulated the troops, a few reactions expressed scepticism about the operation, calling for broader reforms within the security sector. Others dismissed such criticisms, warning against unfounded speculation, including claims about ransom payments.
The Nigerian Army has not responded directly to the mixed reactions but has repeatedly maintained that it remains committed to protecting lives and property and dismantling criminal networks across the country.
The rescue of Col. Ajanaku (rtd) comes amid ongoing concerns over insecurity in parts of Plateau State and other regions, where kidnapping and violent attacks have continued to pose serious challenges to residents and authorities alike.
