The Nigeria Police Force has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Inspector Habila Mangai, who was killed in a road traffic accident while on duty in Imo State.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the police said the incident occurred on April 18, 2026, along the Owerri–Okigwe Road, where the officer was conducting a lawful stop-and-search operation.

According to the statement, “The late Inspector, who was attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was performing his duty at Amaraku when he was knocked down by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah.”

The police added that the injured officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

“The driver of the vehicle and the truck have been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD), Owerri, for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commiserated with the family of the deceased, his colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command.

“The sacrifice of the deceased will not be in vain,” the IGP was quoted as saying, assuring that justice would be served.

The police further assured the public that a thorough investigation had been instituted to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that justice will be duly served in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
