In a display of renewed operational vigilance, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced significant breakthroughs in separate high-profile cases of human trafficking and kidnapping, reinforcing its commitment to dismantling criminal networks across the country.

On July 30, 2025, operatives of the Enugu State Police Command intercepted a suspected human trafficker, Raymond Sunday Wonna, aged 30, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway. The police rescued two young female victims, Miracle Ogar, 18, and Angela Kingsley, 16.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Wonna had lured the girls from Ogoja, Cross River State, under the false pretence of securing job opportunities for them in Ghana. The victims were taken without the knowledge or consent of their parents. Wonna, who claimed to be a casual labourer, intended to transport them to work in a restaurant allegedly owned by his “baby mama” in Ghana.

Further findings indicate that while lodging the victims in a hotel before their departure, Wonna attempted to sexually assault them. The swift intervention of the police not only stopped the illicit journey but also ensured the victims were safely returned to their families. Authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend other members of the trafficking network.

In a separate development, operatives of the Taraba State Police Command, acting on credible intelligence, arrested two suspected kidnappers on August 13, 2025. In collaboration with local security outfits, police stormed Mahadi Forest in Gassol LGA, arresting Yahaya Umar, 20, and Mohammed Umar, 47. An AK-47 rifle was recovered from the suspects.

The suspects have confessed to being part of a kidnapping syndicate responsible for several attacks in Plateau and Taraba States. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and dismantle their operational network.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their vigilance and swift action. He assured citizens of the Force’s commitment to public safety, directing a “meticulous and speedy investigation” to ensure the prosecution of all culprits.

The NPF stated that these recent accomplishments emphasise the significance of community vigilance, intelligence-led operations, and swift law enforcement measures. The Force remains steadfast in its mission to protect citizens from criminal elements operating within and across borders.
