The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday, August 14, 2025, met with representatives of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to finalise preparations for a transparent and credible recruitment of Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) and Constables in 2025.
The Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting, themed “Collaborative Approach for a Transparent and Equitable Police Recruitment Process,” was held at the Parry Osayande Auditorium, PSC Headquarters, Abuja.
PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, mni, assured state representatives that the Commission would work closely with state governments to ensure fairness and equity in the exercise. He urged them to safeguard their state quotas and prevent any hijack of the process, warning that the era of trading or purchasing recruitment slots was over.
“We want to stop corruption in the system and open up the exercise to promote healthy competition and equitable spread,” Argungu said, adding that merit and fairness would not be compromised.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, PSC Commissioner representing the Judiciary, stressed that the Commission was created to ensure equity in police recruitment and operations. He vowed that no one would be allowed to hijack the exercise, noting, “We will rely on you to confirm that those to be recruited are truly from your states.”
Hon. Commissioner representing the Police in the PSC, retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, fdc, LLM, pledged that the new PSC leadership would reinvent the recruitment process to attract the best Nigerian youths for the “Nigeria Police of our dream.”
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the exercise, describing it as a rare opportunity that would not be squandered.
PSC Secretary Chief Onyemuche Nnamani reiterated the Commission’s plan to establish state offices to enhance its constitutional mandate and called for the support of state governments.
The meeting resolved to hold regular consultative engagements, with state representatives pledging their cooperation and full support for the recruitment exercise.
