The Rivers State Police Command has issued a stern warning to motorists across the state, announcing a comprehensive enforcement exercise targeting vehicles with improper identification and unauthorised modifications, effective Monday, March 16, 2026.
The crackdown, aimed at bolstering public safety and curbing criminal activity, will specifically target vehicles operating without valid registration plates, as well as those with obscured or covered plates. Authorities emphasised that these measures are essential for security.
“Vehicles without proper identification, as well as those illegally using revolving lights, pose serious security risks and are often linked to criminal activities,” the Command stated in an official release.
In addition to registration requirements, the police have banned the use of revolving or flash lights on vehicles unless the operator possesses an official letter of approval from the appropriate authorities. Failure to provide such documentation will result in the immediate impoundment of the vehicle.
The Command also addressed the growing security concern regarding tinted glass on commercial vehicles, noting that such vehicles are frequently used by “one chance” kidnapping syndicates.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to be vigilant and cautious when boarding vehicles with heavily tinted windows,” the release warned.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, addressed concerns regarding the implementation of the new policy, promising a disciplined approach from his officers.
“The enforcement exercise will be carried out professionally, fairly, and without bias,” CP Adepoju stated. He further called on residents to cooperate with law enforcement in the interest of public safety and security.
Motorists are reminded that non-compliance will lead to vehicle impoundment and potential prosecution. To avoid issues, the Command urges all drivers to ensure their documents are current, remove unauthorised lighting, and maintain clear, visible number plates at all times.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the Command’s emergency lines. The Control Room can be reached at 0803 200 3514. The Complaint Response Unit is available at 07057605256, 08120822987, or 09035774814, and the PPRO can be contacted at 0901 427 3818. #Securitynewsalert.com
