RULAAC Demands Probe into Alleged Theft of Sowore’s AI Smart Glasses by Police Cameraman

-

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has called for an urgent and impartial investigation into the alleged theft of AI-powered smart glasses belonging to rights activist and former presidential candidate, Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

According to reports, the incident occurred during a peaceful demonstration held by retired police officers at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja. Sowore claimed that a police cameraman attached to the office of the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), identified as Aku Victor Chiemerie, was caught on camera taking his Rayban AI smart glasses and leaving the scene.

Despite submitting petitions—first to the Force Criminal Investigation Department and later to the Divisional Police Station in Asokoro—Sowore has reportedly faced delays and bureaucratic obstacles in securing a proper investigation. His legal representative, Tope Temokun Chambers, has also raised concerns about alleged deliberate obstruction.

RULAAC expressed alarm over the handling of the case, emphasising that the matter goes beyond theft and calls into question the integrity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force. The alleged perpetrator’s connection to the office of the Force PRO, which is meant to represent transparency, has further fueled criticism.

In a statement issued by Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC outlined several demands: A swift and impartial investigation into the incident, Avoidance of internal cover-up, Disciplinary action if the officer is found guilty, Return of the stolen property and clear communication with Sowore and Demonstration of the Force’s commitment to justice and accountability.

RULAAC warned that failure to act decisively would undermine public trust in law
