RULAAC: We welcome resignation of Chairman PSC

-

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Inspector-General of Police, Musilu Smith, today 14th August 2022, tendered his resignation.

The reasons for his resignation are yet unknown. Still, many think it may be connected to the protracted feud between him and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over the Police recruitment process.

It was further gathered that the Board of the Commission voted for his resignation.

The Executive Director of the Rule of Law, and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Okechukwu Nwanguma, said that the resignation of the retired IGP was welcome news.

His words: “We welcome his replacement by retired Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, Commissioner representing the Judiciary and the Northeast in the Commission. Events have proved over and over again that appointing retired IGPs as Chairman of the PSC is counterproductive to the purpose and mission of the Commission. Smith has been a disservice to the purpose and mission of the Commission. The defining characteristics and mission of the commission is that it is a civilian oversight body, external to the police. This requires the PSC to be independent and impartial. It cannot be either of these if a retired former IGP heads it.”
