Troops Repel Terrorist Attack in Kukareta, Kill 24, Recover Weapons

-

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have foiled a terrorist attack in Kukareta, inflicting heavy casualties on the assailants and recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Nigerian Army said troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), operating under Sector 2, successfully repelled the attack in the early hours of April 23, 2026.

According to the statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, the attack began shortly after midnight and lasted until about 3:00 a.m.

“The attack, which commenced shortly after midnight and lasted until about 0300 hours, was met with a swift and coordinated response by vigilant troops who executed a deliberate offensive-defensive action, effectively containing the assault and forcing the terrorists into a disorderly withdrawal,” he said.

Uba disclosed that troops inflicted significant losses on the attackers during the encounter.

“During the engagement, troops inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, with 24 terrorists neutralised so far,” he added.

He further revealed that ongoing exploitation of the battlefield led to the recovery of a large cache of weapons.

“Recovered items include 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), two PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, three RPG tubes, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, 18 AK-47 magazines, and large quantities of belted 7.62mm ammunition for PKT systems,” Uba stated.

The Army spokesman noted that two soldiers were wounded in action but have since been stabilised, while an armoured tank sustained damage during the firefight.

“Troops recorded two personnel wounded in action, who have been stabilised, while one reinforcing armoured tank sustained damage with all tyres blown out during the engagement,” he said.

He added that exploitation operations were ongoing to recover additional bodies and equipment along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes.

“Exploitation operations are ongoing to recover additional bodies and equipment along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes littered with blood trails and medical consumables,” Uba said.

The Army reiterated its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist elements in the North East.

“This successful operation highlights the resilience, combat readiness and fire superiority of OPHK troops in denying terrorists freedom of action. Operations will continue with sustained offensive pressure to consolidate gains and decisively defeat all terrorist elements across the Joint Operations Area,” he added.
