RULAAC Applauds NPF For Tackling Cross-Border Crime, Calls For Similar Efforts Southeast

-

Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) applauded the Nigeria Police Force for effectively tackling cross-border crime, urging it to display such effectiveness in the southeast region.

The Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma, said: “RULAAC extends its heartfelt commendation to the Nigeria Police Force for their exceptional and courageous efforts in dismantling a notorious cross-border kidnapping ring.

“The successful operation, which led to the rescue of 25 victims, including an Ivorian national, is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of the officers involved.”

He stated that the swift action following the alert from Côte d’Ivoire’s National Central Bureau is commendable.

He also said that the meticulous planning and execution of coordinated raids in Ogun State are reflective of the dedication to tackling transnational crime effectively.

Nwanguma said that under the leadership of Commissioner of Police INTERPOL Annexe, Lagos, CP Bode Ojajuni, the operation resulted in the arrest of eight suspects while ensuring the safety of all victims.

He further said, “It is heartwarming to know that Ladji Yoa Pierre was reunited with his mother, showcasing the humanitarian impact of their work. The reaffirmation by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to root out criminal networks and ensure that Nigeria remains a secure environment is both reassuring and inspiring.

“This operation not only emphasises the importance of international collaboration in combating crime but also reinforces public confidence in the capabilities of the Nigerian Police Force.

“We also like to highlight an important aspect of the broader security landscape in Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast. Nigerians, especially in the Southeast, seek a similar robust and professional response from the police in addressing the rising violence and crime perpetrated by organised criminal gangs.

“Local communities have a right to expect protection and service from law enforcement rather than facing retaliation or punitive actions for the actions of a few.

“Building trust between law enforcement and communities is crucial. The police must demonstrate accountability and a commitment to protecting citizens to foster cooperation and support.”

Nwanguma noted that there was a need for a proactive approach in tackling crime that prioritises prevention and community engagement rather than solely focusing on punitive measures.

“Effective policing should involve collaboration with local communities to understand their specific needs and concerns, ensuring that security measures are both effective and respectful of citizens’ rights. We reiterate our call for systemic reform and accountability in law enforcement, ensuring communities feel safe and supported in the fight against crime. We also call for continued support and empowerment of our law enforcement agencies in their vital role of safeguarding lives and upholding justice in Nigeria and beyond,” said Nwanguma.
