The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has announced significant improvements at Oke-Adu Primary Health Care Centre in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State following its recent advocacy highlighting poor conditions and irregularities at the facility.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the forum said the intervention by relevant authorities came after concerns were raised about infection prevention failures, inadequate medical equipment, poor working conditions, and practices that posed risks to both healthcare workers and patients.
According to the ENF, one of the most disturbing issues uncovered at the facility was the reported use of the same delivery instruments for HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients due to a shortage of equipment and sterilisation resources. The forum also cited the inability of health workers to effectively manage some medical cases because of inadequate equipment and ineffective referral systems.
The group said the conditions exposed patients and healthcare workers to avoidable health risks while undermining the quality of healthcare services available to the community.
Following public attention generated by the forum’s intervention, which was amplified by Sahara Reporters, the Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government and the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board reportedly took steps to address some of the identified challenges.
According to the ENF, the health centre has now received additional delivery instruments designated for HIV-negative patients, sterilisation drums to support proper sterilisation procedures, bowls, and other basic medical equipment required for service delivery. The forum also claimed that unqualified personnel previously operating at the facility had been removed.
The organisation commended the local government authorities and the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board for responding positively to the concerns raised.
“Rather than focusing on victimisation or witch-hunting those who drew attention to the problems, they chose the path of responsibility by identifying solutions and taking corrective action,” the statement said.
The forum noted that while the interventions were commendable, they represented only an initial step towards addressing broader challenges facing primary healthcare delivery in the state.
It called for a comprehensive upgrade of Primary Health Care Centres across Oyo State, stressing that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen and that governments at all levels have a responsibility to provide adequate resources, infrastructure, equipment, and manpower.
The ENF also disclosed that it had received complaints alleging that some Primary Health Care Centres in the state are headed by personnel who do not possess the nursing qualifications required for such positions.
The forum said its research team is currently investigating the allegations and will make its findings public at the appropriate time.
It maintained that keeping the public informed about developments arising from its advocacy efforts remains an important part of its mission, adding that the recent improvements at Oke-Adu PHC demonstrate how transparency, accountability, and constructive engagement can bring positive change.
The group reiterated its commitment to advocating for improved working conditions for healthcare workers, accountability in public institutions, and a healthcare system that serves the interests of all Nigerians. #Securitynewsalert.com
