The Police Service Commission (PSC) has raised strong concerns over a proposed nationwide protest by retired police officers, describing the move as “diversionary and ill-timed.”
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commission warned that the planned demonstrations, while touching on legitimate issues, risk undermining ongoing government efforts to improve the welfare of retired police personnel.
PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu (mni), has previously denounced the unequal and discriminatory pension arrangements affecting segments of retired officers. He reiterated the need for a harmonised and democratic pension scheme for police retirees, affirming that government agencies are already addressing the disparities.
The Commission urged affected officers to opt for dialogue and continuous engagement rather than public protest. “This is not the time to stir unrest,” the statement read, warning that such actions could distract from the broader goals of national peace and democratic progress.
The PSC emphasised its unwavering commitment to enhancing welfare for both serving and retired personnel and reassured that it remains actively involved in pushing for meaningful reforms.
The Commission appealed to organisers of the planned protest to reconsider their approach and return to the negotiating table. “The nation cannot afford unnecessary distractions on its democratic path,” the statement concluded.
