Tension flared in Oru-Ijebu on Saturday as a group of students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) descended on the local Police Division, leading to a confrontation that required reinforcement and the use of tear gas to quell.
The incident began on March 28, 2026, when a large group of students mobilised at the Oru-Ijebu Police Division. The protesters claimed that several of their colleagues were being held in unlawful detention.
However, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) refuted these claims, stating officially that no students were in the division’s custody at the time of the protest.
According to a statement released by the Ogun State Police Command, the situation turned volatile when the students, dissatisfied with the DPO’s explanation, became agitated. The group reportedly breached the station gate by force, attacked the facility with stones and bottles, and issued direct threats against police personnel and government property.
Facing a significant security breach, the command called for immediate reinforcements. Officers eventually used tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent further damage to the station.
Normalcy has since been restored to the area, though the atmosphere remains cautious. DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Command, emphasised that while the police remain committed to public safety, they will not tolerate lawlessness.
“The Command urges the public, especially students, to address grievances through lawful and peaceful channels,” Babaseyi stated, reaffirming the force’s commitment to professionalism and public safety.
