The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismantled an internet fraud training facility, popularly referred to as a “Yahoo Academy,” in Becki Estate, Karu, Federal Capital Territory.
In a sting operation carried out on Thursday, operatives arrested 31 suspects, including two alleged kingpins and several interns, who were reportedly undergoing tutorials in cyber fraud.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development, saying:
“Our operatives stormed the facility following credible intelligence. The suspects were caught in the act, receiving training on internet fraud techniques.”
Items recovered during the raid include 18 laptops, dozens of mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets believed to be tools of the illicit trade.
Investigations revealed that some of the interns were lured from Benue State under the guise of job offers. Upon arrival, however, they were allegedly handed communication devices and specialised software to begin their training in online scams.
According to EFCC officials, the academy proprietors enforced strict compliance by housing recruits within the facility, confiscating their personal phones, and restricting movement.
“They were completely cut off from the outside world. Any sign of resistance was met with corporal punishment,” an EFCC investigator disclosed.
The Commission stated that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are concluded. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to rid the country of cybercrime and protect young Nigerians from exploitation,” Oyewale added. #Securitynewsalert.com
