Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to launch an immediate and transparent investigation into the death of a young man named Hilary, who was reportedly pushed from a two-storey building in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in what is suspected to be a homophobic attack.
According to the human rights organisation, Hilary’s death is believed to be linked to a growing trend known as “Kito” a form of targeted violence in which individuals are lured through dating apps or social media under false pretences, then subjected to robbery, assault, extortion, or blackmail, often with threats to expose their sexual orientation.
“This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for authorities to address the rising cases of Kito and protect vulnerable communities,” Amnesty International Nigeria stated in a post on social media. “Justice must be served for Hilary and others who have suffered similar fates.”
The hashtag #JusticeForHilary has since gained traction online, with activists and citizens demanding accountability and stronger protections against anti-LBGTQ+ violence.
