The grieving widow of late Chikere Obieshi, fondly called JB, has accused the Police Inspector, Mohammed Useni, who shot her husband died during a birthday party at the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State of being a hired killer.
The distraught mother of four, identified as Vivian 28, said she was heartbroken and filled with bitterness. She stressed that her bitterness could only be assuaged by the police getting justice for her husband.
She described the 38 years old JB, as friendly, adding: “He made friends easily and always tried to put smiles on the faces of everybody. What happened at that birthday party was not a case of an accidental shooting, it was a planned killing. I want justice for him, and I want all those involved to be brought to justice.”
Vivian recalled that JB was invited to a birthday party, by someone nicknamed Asiwaju.
She narrated: “According to him, he was invited to the party just close to the bus stop, close to our house and he called me. When he called me, he said that he didn’t like going to such places, but he was somebody that liked honouring invitations. Before he entered the venue, he called, saying that he wanted to see my face. He said that he would just dash in, show his face, and step out. He promised to be home in the next few minutes. Minutes after one phone conversation, I heard there were sounds of gunshots at the bus stop, at Da-Silver Club and that the so-called Asiwaju that invited my husband to the birthday, jumped over the fence and escaped, and till now, nobody had seen or heard from him. I feel this was a perfectly signed deal. Before the incident on that fateful Sunday, the celebrant had called my husband, telling him of a birthday party. Later that night, he called JB, that it had been canceled, that they should move it till Sunday.”
Pointing to the culpability of the celebrant in the killing of her husband, Vivian opined that the party was deliberately held close to their area so that JB would not be able to refuse to attend.
She said: “If it was far, he wouldn’t have gone because he knows the condition of his family. He knows my condition. I believe vividly that this was a set-up.”
Describing a video, in which she said. Vivian noted: “From the video that I saw, the Asiwaju was very anxious, he felt something was going to happen. My husband was spraying his money and he was just standing uprightly, not moving and not dancing. Immediately the gunshot was aimed, he flew over the fence, took his car, and left. I believe this was a clear assassin’s case.”
She called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba to ensure the fleeing inspector and celebrant were located and justice done.
“I know my husband’s soul is not going to rest until justice is served. All his plans for us, and everything, gone just like that! Just one person trying to shatter the lives of my children and I,” said Vivian.
She also said that her husband was a very straightforward person and would always describe his family as his investment.
She stated: “He didn’t joke with his family, his children, his mother, or his siblings. On the day JB was killed, the police didn’t contact me, rather I was the person that called the police in the morning, and then I was informed of his death. All efforts to reach JB on phone were abortive, but a policeman picked. I told him to give the phone to my husband, that I wanted to hear his voice. He said that I should come to the station.”
She expressed doubt that justice would be done in the case of her dead husband, adding: “I am not sure of justice because I know Asiwaju works with the police, and I know he has connections. I know they are trying their best to cover some things up and that is why I am calling on everybody and on the IGP, the youth to help seek justice for my husband, if not for me but for my children because I don’t know where to start from. I need justice.”
Earlier, family members and friends of the deceased held a press conference at the Computer Village office of the deceased, calling for justice.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Superintendent of Police (SP), Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday confirmed there was a shooting incident at a birthday party in Egbeda.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has ordered an immediate full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
