Edo Judiciary Declares Full Support for Governor Okpebholo’s Anti-Cultism and Anti-Kidnapping Drive

The judiciary and legal community in Edo State have thrown their weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo’s intensified campaign against cultism and kidnapping, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s efforts to curb rising insecurity.

The show of solidarity came during a high-level meeting held at the Government House, Benin City, where Governor Okpebholo hosted the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa, alongside a delegation of judges and legal professionals.

Describing the engagement as “very cordial,” the Governor emphasised the importance of collaboration between the executive and judicial arms of government. “I appreciate the synergy we have enjoyed so far. I usually get quick and helpful responses whenever I seek legal advice,” he noted.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s uncompromising stance against cultism and kidnapping, appealing to the judiciary for continued cooperation in enforcing law and order.

“There is a fight against cultism, and I am taking it very seriously. I need your cooperation,” the Governor stressed. “These crimes are a major setback to our economic development. We must bring them down to the barest minimum so we can feel safe again, our children can invest here, and their investments will be protected.”

His remarks come in the wake of recent legislative actions, including the signing of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025 and the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2025. These laws introduce stringent penalties—ranging from 10 years for harbouring cultists to 21 years for cult-related injury or damage, and the death sentence for kidnappers whose victims die.

In response to the Chief Judge’s concerns regarding staffing shortages in the judiciary—prompted by the emigration of professionals seeking better prospects—Governor Okpebholo pledged support for recruiting additional judicial staff to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of case prosecution.
Justice Okungbowa’s delegation, representing a broad spectrum of Edo’s judicial hierarchy, signaled a unified commitment to reinforcing the rule of law across the state.
The meeting concluded with renewed determination from both the executive and judicial branches to purge Edo State of criminal elements and establish a secure environment for all residents.
