Edo Police Arrest Officer, Three Civilians for Brutality, Extortion, Armed Robbery in Benin City

-

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving police officer and three civilians over alleged involvement in extortion, brutality, and armed robbery in Benin City.

The arrests followed a viral video in which a victim alleged that he was abducted by policemen, dispossessed of his phone and other belongings, and subjected to intimidation. Acting on the complaint and similar reports, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, ordered a swift investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

On August 15, 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects in a silver Toyota Yaris and recovered incriminating items. The arrested officer was identified as Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi. He was arrested alongside three civilian accomplices: Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho. The group allegedly conspired to terrorize residents of Benin City through acts of extortion and harassment.

In a statement, the Command strongly condemned the conduct, describing it as “shameful and criminal.” CP Agbonika assured the public that the suspects would face the full weight of the law, stressing that there would be no hiding place for rogue elements within the Force.

He further warned that any police officer found engaging in misconduct, extortion, brutality, or any form of corruption would be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted under the law.

The Command also urged members of the public—especially the victim featured in the viral video—to come forward with credible information to aid investigations and ensure justice is served.

The Edo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
