Eight inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kaduna have successfully graduated from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), marking a significant milestone in the Nigerian Correctional Service’s rehabilitation efforts.
According to the Command Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna State Correctional Service, Zaki Emmanuel Mahmud, the graduates include seven who completed undergraduate programs and one inmate who earned a Master’s degree.
The graduation ceremony took place within the custodial centre, with the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, represented by a senior official. The representative praised the inmates for their resilience and dedication to education despite their circumstances.
Speaking on behalf of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, the Commandant of the Correctional Service Staff College, Kaduna, emphasised that the achievement reflects the objectives of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, which prioritises reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.
The Kaduna State Command reaffirmed its commitment to expanding educational opportunities for inmates, stressing that such initiatives are vital in preparing them for productive reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
