Enugu Police Arrests Three Suspected Power Cable Vandals

-

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested three men suspected of vandalising high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area.

The suspects were intercepted by the Command’s Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search duty along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway at approximately 4:48 a.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025.

In a press release issued Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the operatives stopped a white-coloured minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered lengths of high-voltage aluminium cables concealed with cassava leaves.

The police also recovered one large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag containing clothes.

The three suspects have been identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28).

According to the police statement, the men confessed to having vandalised the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in the Oduma community. They were reportedly transporting the stolen cables to the New Artisan Market in Enugu to sell them.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commented on the arrest, reiterating the Command’s commitment to “fishing out vandals and other criminals bent on destroying and denying citizens the enjoyment of essential social amenities.” He also called on the public to continue to support the Police in this quest.

SP Ndukwe stated that the suspects will be arraigned in court following the conclusion of the investigation.
