A leading civil society organisation, the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), has raised alarm over what it describes as a surge in politically charged civil and criminal litigations across Abia State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group called for restraint, respect for judicial processes, and protection of democratic freedoms.
FENRAD, known for its pro-democracy and human rights advocacy, expressed concern that the recent wave of lawsuits may be undermining civic space and democratic engagement. While acknowledging the courts as a legitimate avenue for seeking justice, the group warned against the politicisation of legal instruments.
“Litigation should never be weaponised as a means of silencing dissent or intimidating opponents,” the statement read. “In a democracy, justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
The organisation emphasised the importance of preserving the integrity of the judiciary, urging litigants and their supporters to avoid actions or rhetoric that could be perceived as attempts to sway judicial outcomes or erode public trust in the courts.
FENRAD also cautioned against the misuse of cybercrime laws to target journalists, civic actors, or dissenting voices, warning that such practices threaten constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and risk shrinking the civic space.
Addressing the tone of public debate in Abia State, FENRAD noted a troubling rise in toxic commentary across both traditional and social media platforms. The group appealed to political parties, media outlets, and citizens to engage in respectful, fact-based discussions.
“Democracy thrives when citizens engage in robust yet respectful debate,” the statement noted. “Vilification, hate speech, and misinformation only deepen divisions and distract from the substantive issues of governance and justice.”
FENRAD reaffirmed the importance of constructive dissent in a democratic society, warning against efforts to criminalise the peaceful expression of differing opinions. The group advocated for inclusive dialogue, civic education, and tolerance as tools for strengthening governance.
The organisation stressed that freedom of expression must be protected, provided it does not infringe on others’ rights or threaten public peace.
In its concluding remarks, FENRAD urged all stakeholders, political actors, the media, and the general public to uphold peace, due process, and mutual respect. The group believes that only through open and law-abiding engagement can Abia State continue to build on its democratic progress.
