The Imo State Police Command has detained four officers after a viral video showed them forcing a young man into the boot of a vehicle during an operation in Nekede, Owerri. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, around 9:00 a.m. along Human Race Road.
Preliminary findings identified two regular officers from the Nekede Divisional Headquarters and two Supernumerary Police Officers as those involved.
Okoye explained that the team was conducting a raid at a suspected drug trafficking location, where two suspects were arrested, and a substance believed to be Cannabis Sativa was recovered.
Despite the seizure, the command condemned the officers’ actions as unprofessional and inhumane, stressing that it violated police ethics and procedures.
The Commissioner of Police ordered the immediate detention of the four officers, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Disciplinary proceedings have already begun, and the command assured the public that the outcome will be made public once concluded.
