IT Expert Who Exposed Organ Harvesting Claims Faces Relentless Persecution by Police

The compelling and disturbing case of Nnamdi Daniel Emeh has unveiled a pattern of state persecution against a Nigerian whistleblower who exposed grave allegations, including organ harvesting, extrajudicial killings, and corruption, allegedly involving the Anambra State Police Command.

Rather than a transparent investigation into the serious claims, Nigerian authorities appear to have relentlessly targeted Emeh himself, subjecting him to arrest, prolonged detention, and repeated violation of court-ordered bail.

Nnamdi Emeh, an Information Technology and digital tracking specialist with a degree from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, was posted to the Anambra State Police Command for his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in 2022. During his service, he reportedly assisted law enforcement in apprehending high-profile criminal suspects.

The ordeal began in early 2023 after a series of explosive allegations appeared on the anonymous Nigerian social media blog, Gistlover. These posts detailed serious claims of extrajudicial killings, abductions, extortion, corruption, and organ trafficking allegedly perpetrated by members of the Anambra State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a unit Emeh had worked with. Key figures named in the allegations included the unit’s head, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Patrick Agbazue, and Inspector Harrison Akama.

On February 17, 2023, then–Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba constituted a panel to investigate the allegations. However, the findings of this crucial investigation have never been made public.

Just three days after the probe was launched, on February 20, 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for Nnamdi Emeh. Having reportedly been warned that his life was in danger, Emeh had fled Nigeria for the neighbouring Benin Republic. Despite this, he was arrested on March 3, 2023, based on an Interpol Red Notice and forcibly returned to Nigeria.

According to Red Notice Monitor, the arrest followed Emeh’s identification on social media as the alleged source of information leaked to Gistlover. Upon his return, he was charged with a host of offences, including fraud, money laundering, impersonation of a police officer, unlawful possession of a firearm, and defamation. Red Notice Monitor has criticised these charges as being “consistent with the types of false charges deployed by despotic regimes in politically motivated Red Notices against dissidents.”

Emeh was initially detained in Abuja before being transferred to Awka, a move that sparked public alarm amid reports of a plot to assassinate him during the transit. Following the outcry, he was formally charged and produced in open court. On May 11, 2023, he was remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre.

On May 17, 2023, the Federal High Court in Awka granted Emeh bail pending trial, subject to conditions that were eventually fulfilled by his legal team. Crucially, the police initially refused to release his passport, preventing his release. Although a court order eventually compelled the police to release the passport on July 6, 2023, Emeh was still not freed. His lawyers contend that obstructive conduct by officials of the Federal High Court in Awka prevented his release despite all bail conditions being perfected.

The procedural logjam continued: on May 15, 2024, Justice S. M. Shuaibu, who took over the case after the death of the original judge, issued a release warrant. The very next day, police filed an ex parte application seeking a stay of execution and revocation of the bail order. Though Justice Shuaibu dismissed the police application on July 9, 2024, the release warrant was never executed. The case was subsequently reassigned to a new judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike.

During the resumption of the case on November 15, 2024, it was shockingly revealed that key court documents, including the release warrant, were missing from the case file. In January 2025, Justice Anyadike ruled that new sureties must be produced to perfect the existing bail, a decision challenged by the defence. The trial is ongoing, with the latest adjournment to December 9, 2025.

The focus on the whistleblower intensified in late October 2025 when credible information emerged indicating that Emeh’s life was in imminent danger. His father, Professor John Emeh, raised alarm over a plot to smuggle a weapon into the Awka Correctional Centre to engineer a fight leading to his son’s assassination.

In response, Blueprint for Free Speech, alongside twenty other international NGOs, issued an open letter calling for Emeh’s immediate release, an investigation into the threats against his life, and assurances of his safety. The letter also demanded that the Inspector General of Police publicly release the findings of the earlier investigation into the Anambra RRS allegations.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) registered the complaint on November 20, 2025, and referred it for preliminary investigation.

In a significant recognition of his plight, Nnamdi Emeh was named one of the Africa-region winners of the Eighth Blueprint Whistleblowing Prizes on December 3, 2025, highlighting the extreme risks faced by whistleblowers acting in the public interest.

Nnamdi Emeh remains in custody, supported by Blueprint for Free Speech and the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF).
