Lagos State has a law prohibiting corporal punishment in schools, with teachers now expected to use positive discipline methods like counselling.
The government has reaffirmed this ban, emphasising that actions like flogging, slapping, or bullying are not permitted and can lead to injury or more serious harm. Alternative disciplinary actions that can be used include counselling or minor punishments like cleaning the school premises, to shape student behaviour positively.
Corporal punishment is banned: Flogging, slapping, or any form of physical punishment is strictly prohibited in Lagos schools.
Positive discipline is required: Teachers must use counselling as the primary method of correcting misbehaviour.
Alternative punishments: Other acceptable forms of discipline include minor tasks like picking up dirt or cutting grass, as long as they are not physically harmful.
Protection from abuse: The ban is in place to protect students from injury and to promote a humane learning environment.
Legal backing: The ban aligns with broader efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect, with specific laws in place to punish severe mistreatment.
