Lagos Govt, MTN Partner to Tackle Crime, Sanitation with Obalende Under-Bridge Redevelopment

-

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge, long regarded as a security and environmental flashpoint, into a modern transport hub designed to curb crime, improve sanitation and enhance public safety in the area.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the initiative in a statement on Wednesday, saying the state is collaborating with MTN Nigeria to transform the space into the Y’ELLO Bus Park.

According to Wahab, the project is aimed at reclaiming a once “notorious and degraded” location and converting it into a functional, secure and community-centred transport facility that will serve commuters and residents in the Obalende axis.

“This redevelopment will convert what was once a notorious and degraded space into a functional, secure, and community-centred facility,” Wahab said.

He explained that the new bus park will feature a regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security agencies, more than 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks and other essential amenities.

From a security standpoint, Wahab noted that the design places strong emphasis on safety and crime prevention. He said solar-powered lighting would be installed to improve night-time visibility, eliminate blind spots and enhance the effectiveness of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance in the area.

“Solar-powered lighting will improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance CCTV effectiveness, helping to curb criminal activities and improve overall security in the Obalende axis,” he said.

The commissioner added that the presence of security agencies within the facility would further deter criminal activities that had previously thrived under the bridge due to poor lighting, congestion and lack of regulation.

Beyond security, the project also targets long-standing environmental and public health concerns. Wahab disclosed that a biodigester system would be introduced to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while a dedicated recycling station would discourage illegal waste dumping that has plagued the area for years.

“In line with our commitment to climate responsibility, the project includes the installation of solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint,” he said, adding that tree planting is planned to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment.

Wahab described the redevelopment as part of the state government’s broader strategy to reclaim public spaces, reduce urban crime and ensure infrastructure works for both people and the environment.

“This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable, and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern, responsible way,” he said.

The Obalende under-bridge has for years been associated with traffic disorder, poor sanitation and security concerns. Residents and commuters have often raised alarms over criminal activities in the area, particularly at night.

With the Y’ELLO Bus Park project, the Lagos State Government says it is taking a decisive step toward addressing these challenges and building what Wahab described as “a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Lagos.”
