The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has issued an urgent appeal to Nigerians residing in South Africa, urging them to adhere strictly to safety protocols following a wave of violent anti-foreigner demonstrations sweeping across several provinces.
The warning follows an official security advisory from the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg, which detailed a deteriorating security situation.
According to the consulate, recent protests in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have devolved into chaos, resulting in widespread looting, significant property damage, and numerous injuries.
Officials are particularly concerned about the coming days, as intelligence suggests the unrest is spreading toward the country’s economic heartland.
“Further protests are scheduled to take place in the Gauteng Province between April 27 and 29, 2026,” the Consulate General warned in a circular. “Demonstrators intend to apply increased pressure on the South African government regarding the presence of foreign nationals.”
In response to the escalating crisis, the Nigerian government has initiated high-level talks to ensure the protection of its citizens. NiDCOM confirmed that Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is currently in active negotiations with her South African counterparts.
“The Minister is engaging in intensive diplomatic efforts to address the underlying causes of this situation and to secure the safety of our people,” a commission spokesperson stated.
NiDCOM and the Consulate have advised the Nigerian community to maintain a low profile and prioritise personal safety.
Citizens are instructed to follow all directives issued by the Nigerian Consulate General without exception. Furthermore, they are urged to exercise extreme vigilance and avoid known protest hotspots, particularly in Gauteng, over the next 72 hours.
The commission concluded its statement by stressing the need for all Nigerians to remain law-abiding at all times, emphasising that maintaining order and cooperation with local authorities is crucial during this period of heightened tension.
As the situation develops, the Nigerian mission in South Africa remains on high alert, monitoring the scheduled demonstrations beginning tomorrow. #Securitynewsalert.com
