Nigeria’s First Lady Urges New POWA President  to Prioritise Improving Lives of police families

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, hosted Mrs Mutiat Disu, the wife of the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, at the State House on Tuesday to discuss collaborative efforts to improve the lives of police families nationwide.

During the visit, Senator Tinubu emphasised the importance of prioritising the welfare of police officers’ spouses, urging the new leadership to remain steadfast in advocacy and support for their members. The meeting, held behind closed doors, served as a strategic introductory session between the First Lady and the leadership of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).

Speaking to the press following the engagement, Mrs Disu, who serves as the National President of POWA, expressed her commitment to aligning the association’s goals with the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). She noted that the partnership would focus heavily on health, social intervention, and economic empowerment for women within the police community.

“The purpose of visiting her is to tap from her wealth of experiences and to know about programs she has for the masses, to see how the POWA can benefit from the programs,” Mrs Disu stated.

Reflecting on the interaction, the POWA President highlighted the value of the First Lady’s mentorship. “I have learnt so much from her within this short period that I have spoken with her, and I am sure that by the time I start working with her, my people will benefit more from the RHI programs. We will be looking at the RHI social intervention and healthcare for police families, too.”Mrs. Disu further underscored that because the Renewed Hope Initiative focuses significantly on women’s development, it serves as a natural fit for her organisation. “What the people should expect from me is that I am ready to work with Mama on this RHI as it affects our women, since the RHI is basically for women and POWA is dominated by women,” she added.

This visit comes on the heels of a transition in the police high command. Mrs Mutiat Disu recently assumed the leadership of POWA after her husband, IGP Tunji Disu, succeeded Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector General of Police on February 24, 2026.
