Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the Federal Government to stop engaging in negotiations or issuing apologies to terrorists, insisting that only firm action and international support can address Nigeria’s deepening insecurity.
According to the Punch Newspaper, Obasanjo made the remarks on Friday at the Plateau State Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival in Jos, the state capital. He warned that appeasing violent groups would only embolden them, stressing that the country must adopt a more decisive strategy to confront banditry and terrorism.
His comments come as northern communities continue to grapple with a surge in killings, abductions, and attacks. One of the most shocking incidents occurred on November 21, when 315 students and 13 teachers were kidnapped from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State.
The former president reiterated that Nigeria cannot afford to appear weak in the face of sustained violence, calling for a robust, coordinated response backed by global assistance where necessary.
