The Ogun State Police Command has again dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media that purportedly shows armed bandits operating in a forest in Ogun State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the video had been previously investigated and debunked by the command, stressing that it has no connection to Ogun State or any part of Nigeria.
According to Babaseyi, despite repeated clarifications by the police, the recycled footage continues to be shared by individuals intent on spreading fear and misinformation among residents.
He explained that investigations and independent fact-checks conducted by the command established that the video was recorded in Kenya during an operation involving cattle rustlers and was originally uploaded online in 2022.
“The footage is neither recent nor related to Ogun State,” Babaseyi stated, adding that there is no intelligence, operational, or security report to support the claims accompanying the video.
The police spokesperson reiterated that the viral clip is fake and should be disregarded by members of the public.
He noted that the continuous circulation of already-debunked content serves no purpose other than creating unnecessary panic and undermining public confidence in security efforts.
Babaseyi advised residents to rely on official sources for security information and to refrain from sharing unverified content on social media.
He further reassured residents that Ogun State remains safe, peaceful, and secure, while urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through appropriate channels. #Securitynewsalert.com
