The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, on Thursday 16th September 2022, said that the command under his watch was fully ready and prepared to ensure that there was the safety of lives and property during the 2023 general elections.

Alabi said this during the 41st Graduation Ceremony of Police Human Rights Officers. The Lagos State Police Stakeholder Accountability Forum organised the event in partnership with the Lagos State Police Command and Crime Victims Foundation (CRIVIFON). The ceremony occurred at the Police Officers Mess, 24, Sobo Arobiodun Street, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Alabi, who urged the policemen to ensure prioritizing the tenets of human rights while carrying out their lawful duties, also spoke on other sundry issues.

Speaking on issues relating to giving treatment to gunshot victims, Alabi said: “The Police are fully prepared to ensure that there is the safety of lives and property during the 2023 general elections. We do not like the practice whereby hospitals refuse to treat victims of gunshot wounds. The law stipulates that hospitals can treat victims of gunshot wounds, but they must report the case to the police.”

The 91 police personnel, trained on the fundamentals of human rights, were issued certificates for completing the course.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Denton Police Station, a Superintendent of Police (SP), Joseph, received an award of excellence while SP Olorogun Lateef Adisa, the class governor was presented with the award for the best graduating officer of the course.

The guest speaker of the occasion, Barrister Olasupo Ojo, a civil rights activist and Director, National Human Rights Commission, Southwest, admonished the graduating officers to imbibe and inculcate all they have learnt on the course on the discharge of their official duties.

He enjoined them to eschew vices like bribery, corruption, injustice and human rights violations that could tarnish their images and that of the Police Force.

Other dignitaries present at the ceremony include Hon. Bayo Balogun, a member of the House of Representatives,Mrs. Gloria Egbuyi, the Executive Director of CRVIFON, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, Coordinator of Lagos Stakeholder Forum on Police Accountability, Mrs.Adebayo Aderemi from the NBA, Ikeja chapter, Mrs Abuleja George, Chairman, NBA Lagos chapter and Mrs. Titilayo Christiana, from the Directorate of Citizens Rights, Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
