100 Days, And Counting: Governor Nwifuru’s Silence on Emmanuel Acha Is Complicity

-

By Okechukwu Nwanguma

For 100 days and counting, Comrade Emmanuel Acha — a respected human rights advocate and voice for the voiceless — has been rotting in Abakaliki Prison on sham charges. His real offence? Filing a lawsuit against the Ebonyi State Government over its mishandling of the Effium-Ezza crisis.

He was snatched from his home in Enugu at dawn without a warrant, brutalised, and railroaded into a criminal case built on lies. Now, under Charge No: HKW/27C/2025, the state is accusing him of murder and illegal arms possession — allegations as baseless as they are vindictive. This is persecution, not prosecution.

We have written. We have petitioned. Civil society coalitions have spoken with one voice: Free Emmanuel Acha now. Yet, Governor Francis Nwifuru has blocked his ears, choosing instead to preside over a political witch-hunt. His silence is not neutrality — it is complicity.

By turning the police into a private enforcement squad to crush dissent, the Ebonyi State Government is sending a message that no activist, journalist, or citizen is safe. It is trampling on the Constitution, spitting on the courts, and mocking every promise of peace in Effium-Ezza.

Governor Nwifuru, you have the power to end this injustice today. Every day you remain silent, you confirm to the world that you value political revenge over justice. And history has a long memory.

Free Acha now — or stand forever marked as the governor who jailed justice.
