The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which reportedly claimed more than 200 lives and left many others injured.
In a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, extended Nigeria’s heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the DRC, describing the incident as devastating.
Tuggar said Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Congolese people during the difficult period, noting that the disaster has left entire communities in mourning.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria are with the people of the Congo at this difficult time,” Tuggar said.
He also commended local authorities and emergency responders for their swift efforts in rescuing victims and providing medical care to the injured.
According to the statement, the minister reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to support humanitarian efforts to assist victims and affected communities.
The ministry further recalled reports indicating that the mine collapse was triggered by heavy rainfall. This development has once again highlighted the severe risks faced by vulnerable communities living in mineral-rich regions.
