IGP Disu Bridges Gap with Abuja Journalists in Surprise Visit

-

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu,  caused a wave of spontaneous celebration at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abuja Chapter recently.

What began as a routine day for the capital’s press corps transformed into a scene of “uncontained happiness” as the nation’s top police officer walked into the press centre, signalling a new era of transparency and partnership between the force and the media.

For decades, the relationship between the Nigerian Police Force and the press has been defined by the “hard questions” and the reporting of “the good, the bad, and the painful.” However, observers noted that today’s visit felt less like a formal inspection and more like a bridge-building exercise.

Aliyu Giwa, who is in charge of the Nigeria Police Force’s new media office, captured the sentiment of the encounter, noting that the journalists, traditionally trained to remain neutral observers, were visibly moved by the gesture.

“The jubilation? Unscripted. Uncontained. Completely real,” Giwa shared. “These are journalists, people trained to stay neutral… But today, even they couldn’t hide it. The happiness was written all over the room.”

The visit was characterised by a lack of traditional barriers, with IGP Disu opting for genuine warmth over distant formality. The move is being hailed as a masterclass in “accessible leadership,” emphasising that the press and the police are two sides of the same coin in the quest for a better Nigeria.

Addressing the significance of the moment, Giwa remarked that the man who answered the community’s cries came to them directly, acting as a leader who understands that a free press and a professional police force are partners rather than opponents.

The direct engagement seen today suggests a shifting dynamic in the capital, moving away from bureaucratic layers toward a more open-door policy regarding police-media relations. As the room erupted in cheers, the message was clear: when leadership chooses openness over distance, the response is overwhelmingly positive. #Securitynewsalert.com
