The Delta State Police Command, Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has issued a stern warning to officers against extortion, unprofessionalism, and meddling in civil matters.
During a high-level strategic conference held on Tuesday at the Command Headquarters, CP Oyeniyi met with Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to relay specific directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
The meeting served as a clarion call for a return to core policing values, with the CP emphasising that the era of administrative laxity is over.
“Officers must rededicate themselves to duty and uphold the core values of integrity, professionalism, and service,” CP Oyeniyi stated during the session. “There is a zero-tolerance stance on extortion and the operation of illegal checkpoints. Any officer found engaging in such practices will face strict disciplinary action, and accountability will extend to commanders who fail to enforce these directives within their jurisdictions.”
A major highlight of the conference was the Commissioner’s directive regarding the scope of police intervention in local disputes. He warned officers to steer clear of civil matters, particularly land ownership disputes, unless criminal elements such as violence or homicide are explicitly established.
Addressing the conduct of field operations, the CP condemned the use of “arrest by proxy” and poorly executed raids that lack sufficient evidence. He noted that such actions only serve to erode public trust.
“Policing is service-driven. Members of the public, as our primary stakeholders, must be treated with civility, respect, and professionalism at all times,” the CP maintained. “All enforcement actions must strictly comply with human rights standards and extant laws. Only individuals directly linked to an offence should be arrested and investigated.”
To improve the Command’s public image, CP Oyeniyi ordered that critical duty posts, such as the Charge Room, be manned only by competent and professional officers, noting that these point serve as the primary interface between the police and the citizenry.
The Commissioner concluded the conference by urging his commanders to adopt a proactive, intelligence-led policing approach.
He stressed the importance of community engagement and improved response times to ensure that the Delta State Command remains vigilant against early warning signs of criminal activity. #Securitynewsalert.com
