The Ebonyi State Police Command has denied claims that it received petitions regarding alleged attacks on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the allegations made by a party chieftain on national television as false and without factual basis.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, was responding to allegations made by PDP chieftain, Hon. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Nwobo, during an interview on Arise News, where he accused the command of failing to act on petitions concerning attacks on party members.
According to the police, “no petition relating to any of the alleged attacks has been received by the Ebonyi State Police Command.”
The command said it was therefore “unable to ascertain the basis for the assertion that such petitions were submitted, as no such petition is currently before the Command.”
The police also rejected allegations that officers were withdrawn from providing security due to a “superior order” and that they were present when Barrister Ifeanyi Nworie was allegedly attacked.
Addressing the claim, the command stated: “The assertion that the Police withdrew personnel because of an order is manifestly false and without factual basis.”
It further maintained that “the Police were nowhere near any of the incidents referred to during the interview. In particular, no police officer was present at the residence or compound of Barr. Ifeanyi Nworie at the time of the alleged attack.”
The command said available video clips circulating online supported its position.
Clarifying the issue of security requested by Nworie, the police disclosed that they received a letter from the lawyer on July 31, 2026, titled “Threat to Life and Application for Adequate Security Coverage,” informing the command of a planned reception scheduled for August 1 in Ezza South Local Government Area.
However, the police said Nworie failed to provide additional information needed to facilitate security arrangements.
According to the statement, “Barr. Nworie did not contact the Command to discuss or clarify the request, nor did he provide the Command with any additional information regarding the specific venue or other necessary details that would have facilitated adequate security arrangements for the event.”
The Command added that attempts to reach him by telephone were unsuccessful.
It stressed that the clarification was necessary to dispel any impression that the police deliberately failed to provide security for the event.
The police also said they remained open to investigating the allegations if formal complaints were submitted.
“The Command eagerly awaits the formal submission of petitions concerning the alleged attacks. Each allegation will be subjected to a thorough, impartial and discreet investigation, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law based on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the command said it remained impartial under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor.
The police further reminded organisers of public gatherings to comply with the provisions of the Public Order Act by obtaining the necessary approvals and security arrangements where required.
It also cautioned individuals and groups against making statements capable of escalating tensions in the state.
While acknowledging citizens’ right to freedom of expression, the command warned that it “will not tolerate acts capable of disrupting public peace, inciting violence or threatening the safety of residents.”
The statement concluded by reaffirming the Ebonyi State Police Command’s commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that acts of violence are investigated and addressed in accordance with the law, regardless of the political affiliation of those involved
