The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ajao Adewale, has disclosed that a shockingly persons have been raped and eight babies abandoned in the metropolis between May and June 2025.
The CP disclosed records while sharing the FCT Command’s scorecard today 4th of July 2025. The number of females raped within the months is alarming.
According to the CP, 12 cases of rape were reported within the months under review, 10 suspects were arrested, while four cases are currently under investigation. The Command also recorded 10 raped victims.
The Command received two cases of domestic violence and four cases of child trafficking, which were transferred to the SCID from various Divisions and eight suspects were arrested.
The CP also mentioned that three children were rescued from traffickers, eight abandoned and rescued babies, and later handed over to the Social Welfare Centre.
According to unwomen.org publication titled, Arrested For Being Raped: ChangingHarmful Laws And Norms In Nigeria, “30% of women aged 15-49 have reported experiences of sexual abuse, with a marked divide between girls and women in urban (33%) and rural (24%) areas. Nigeria has the highest number of child marriages, with an estimated 22 million child brides as of 2018, which accounts for 40% of all child brides in West Africa.”
The CP said: “In alignment with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the FCT police command conducted a thorough crime-mapping, identified crime hotspots and implemented an action plan which led to the following achievements within May and June 2025. During the months under review, a total of 49 cases were reported, leading to the arrest of 82 suspects.”
The breakdown of the achievements is: arrest of 17 suspected kidnappers, while three were killed.
The Command foiled five attempted kidnapping incidents at Apo Waru, Byhazin, Karshi, Kawo-Bwari, Gidan-Dogo Forest Kweri and Abaji, while three suspects were arrested, three others neutralised during a shootout while attempting to kidnap victims at Kawo village clinic in Bwari.
Ajao also mentioned: “We foiled five reported cases-one in Apo and four in Kubwa. Six suspects arrested, four vehicles, a jack-knife, military camouflage and pistol ammunition were recovered. Also, we had five robbery cases reported, and we arrested 17 suspects.
“We also recorded six cases of theft and arrested nine suspects. One suspect was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, and four suspects were arrested in a single reported case of One-Chance.”
The CP said that there was also a reported case of attempted homicide leading to one arrest, with one locally pump action shotgun and one expended cartridge recovered.
The Command also received a case of fraud, leading to two suspects being arrested. “There were four reported cases of car theft, and we arrested five suspects, including illegal scrap dealers who receive, butcher and resell stolen vehicles. The Command recovered three AK 47 rifles with three magazines, one locally made pistol and magazine, one barreta pistol, one pump action shotgun, two LAR rifles and 36 rounds of live ammunition.
“Other exhibits are one axe, nine walkie-talkies, one sharp spear, one short knife, all from robbery cases. One AC Unit, two motorcycles, 27 iron rods, nine mobile phones, 11 power banks, three AirPods, one smart watch, eight ATM cards, six phone chargers, one Sumac fireman generator set from theft cases. Also recovered are a jackknife from a foiled robbery attempt and N79,000 cash recovered from a theft case.”
At least 10 vehicles were recovered from the Durumi Division, Kubwa Division, Central Police Station and the Anti One Chance Squad. Two motorcycles from the kidnapping suspects.
Ajao stated: “The Plan for the upcoming months includes building on the successes of May and June 2025. The Command will intensify community policing engagements, Intelligence-led policing strategies, Targeted clearance operations and Public enlightenment initiatives to address the evolving security demands of the FCT.
“In conclusion, these achievements underscore the command’s commitment and effort in the proactive fight and intelligence-led strategies against criminality within the nation’s capital and its environs.
“To this end, I wish to assure the residents of the Federal Capital Territory that we will keep taking the fight to the criminals wherever they are to sustain the peace being enjoyed in the FCT.”
