A violent incident involving suspected jealousy over a romantic relationship has left a young woman seriously injured and stirred calls for justice from advocacy groups in the Gbagada area of Lagos.
The assault occurred on April 21, 2025, at 1 Audio Street, Gbagada, where a woman identified as Bukky allegedly stabbed another woman, Joy, in the cheek with scissors.
The attack reportedly stemmed from suspicions that Joy was romantically involved with Bukky’s boyfriend, a 26-year-old man named Enny who works at his sister’s grocery store on the same street.
According to Comrade Okanlawon Toyin of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), the attack followed the discovery of a video showing Joy partially unclothed.
Bukky allegedly found the video on Enny’s phone early Sunday morning, after it had reportedly been unlocked using his fingerprint while he was asleep. Enny is said to have confessed to an ongoing relationship with Joy.
By 7 a.m., Bukky reportedly went to Joy’s residence—where Joy lives with her married sister—and stabbed her in the cheek, leaving a deep wound.
Joy was immediately taken to Theolad Hospital for treatment and received stitches for the injury.
Later that day, a community meeting was convened by the CDA Chairman, known locally as “Seebobo.”
The chairman declared the matter settled, ordering Enny and Bukky to pay Joy ₦70,000 in damages and support her treatment. The victim’s brother-in-law reportedly deleted the video from Enny’s phone following the chairman’s directive.
ACVPN has challenged the chairman’s handling of the situation, emphasising that the case qualifies as a criminal matter, not a civil dispute.
The organisation ensured the matter was officially reported to the Bariga Police Division and expressed concern over attempts to interfere with proper legal processes.
There are growing fears of potential political influence, with claims by local individuals that the case could be buried due to connections with law enforcement. ACVPN is calling on all relevant state actors—including the Lagos State Police Command Gender Unit—to ensure justice prevails.
In a statement shared publicly, ACVPN urged authorities to act swiftly and transparently:
“We hereby plead on behalf of the victim to all State Actors to make sure the needful is done.”
