Delta Police: Ex-Convict Arrested for Motorcycle Theft Just Six Days After Prison Release +VIDEO

-

In a striking case of recidivism, the Delta State Police Command has arrested an ex-convict for allegedly stealing a motorcycle just six days after he was released from prison for the very same offence.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, had just completed a two-year jail term at the Ogwashi-Ukwu Correctional Centre. He was released last Thursday after serving his full sentence for stealing a motorcycle.

However, his newfound freedom was short-lived. Police apprehended him on Wednesday following a distress call about a stolen motorcycle in the vicinity of the state capital.

Confirming the arrest, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, expressed dismay at the suspect’s swift return to crime.

“It is a disappointing development,” DSP Edafe stated. “The suspect was released from the Ogwashi-Ukwu facility on August 29, 2025, after serving two years for stealing a motorcycle. Barely a week later, he was arrested for the same crime. Our operatives acted swiftly on intelligence and apprehended him with the stolen item.”

According to police sources, the suspect allegedly saw an opportunity to steal a parked motorcycle belonging to a commercial operator and made away with it. The owner quickly raised an alarm, leading to a swift response from a nearby police patrol unit.

The incident has sparked conversations among residents about the challenges of prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is undergoing interrogation. Police say he will be charged in court as soon as the investigation is concluded, facing the prospect of a return to the correctional system he just exited.
