The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through the Department of Child Development under the Women Affairs Secretariat, has rescued several children from an orphanage in Kagini, Bwari Area Council, as part of an intensified effort to protect vulnerable children and sanitise the adoption process in the FCT.
The rescue followed the commencement of a coordinated operation to monitor adopted children within the FCT, some of whom were reportedly brought in from Benue State. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), alongside other security and social welfare agencies.
According to officials, the intervention was triggered by weeks of discreet investigations by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, led by the Director of Child Development, Dr. Idris Attah, over concerns surrounding the orphanage’s operations and the welfare of children under its care.
However, upon arrival at the facility, officials discovered that the proprietress had fled hours earlier, abandoning the orphanage. Authorities suspect her disappearance may be connected to the ongoing investigation and alleged violations of adoption and child protection laws.
Some of the children rescued from the facility have been identified and placed in protective custody. Officials said arrangements are being made to ensure their safety, including medical examinations and psychological support.
The FCT Administration reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Child Rights Act and ensuring strict compliance with adoption guidelines. It warned that individuals or institutions found violating child protection and adoption laws would be prosecuted.
Investigations are ongoing, as security agencies intensify efforts to locate the fleeing suspect and uncover the full extent of activities carried out at the orphanage.
