The Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN) has drawn attention to the case of a 45-year-old inspector, Joseph Agbo, of the Nigerian Hunter & Forest Security Service (NFSS), who was arrested by officers of the Iju Ishaga (Red House) Division of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.
According to ACVPN, the arrest followed a thorough investigation by its representatives before the police were alerted.
“We ensured that the matter was properly investigated before reporting to the Red Line Iju Division,” an ACVPN spokesperson said.
The victim’s mother alleged that Agbo had repeatedly assaulted her daughter whenever she went to the market to sell goods.
The victim herself recounted her ordeal to ACVPN representatives, stating: “Whenever my mother went to the market, he would call me into his boys’ quarters apartment, drag me inside, and defile me. He told me never to tell anyone, that if I did, I would die. He usually gave me ₦200 afterwards.”
She further alleged that Agbo would wait until his wife had gone to the market before committing the acts.
“He had carnal knowledge of me five times and would watch me whenever I was bathing in the backyard beside his apartment,” the victim said.
The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja for further action.
The victim has also received care at one of the Lagos State-approved Sexual Assault Referral Centres.
ACVPN expressed gratitude to the Officer in Charge of Gender, ACP Toyin Kazeem, for providing professional counselling to both the victim and her mother. “Forgiveness is sin when it comes to any form of sexual abuse,” ACVPN emphasised in its statement.
The Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN) has vowed to follow up on the case until the minor receives justice.
