NDLEA: Ex-Cannabis Farmers in Ondo Receive N30 Million Boost

-

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commenced the disbursement of multi-million naira grants to former cannabis growers in Ondo State.

On Monday, March 16, 2026, the agency presented cheques totalling N30 million to the communities of Ifon, Ilu-Abo, and Eleyowo.

This funding marks the first phase of the NDLEA’s Alternative Development Pilot Project, designed to transition local farmers from the cultivation of illegal substances to sustainable food crop farming.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. MB Marwa (Rtd), represented by his Chief of Staff, Colonel Murtala Aminu, oversaw the presentation. Each of the three communities received N10 million, representing an initial 50% of a promised N20 million total package per community, to kickstart their transition to legitimate agriculture.

This financial injection follows the earlier distribution of a trailer load of fertilisers and knapsack sprayers to the communities. These resources are intended to provide the necessary infrastructure for farmers to pivot toward food crop cultivation and establish a foundation for sustainable livelihoods.

The ceremony was attended by a high-ranking delegation of traditional rulers, chiefs, and community members, signalling strong local backing for the initiative. By involving traditional institutions, the NDLEA aims to ensure the long-term success of the “Alternative Development” strategy, which focuses on providing economic alternatives rather than relying solely on enforcement and eradication.

“This marks a new chapter,” a representative noted during the presentation. “The agency is committed to supporting this transition from cannabis cultivation to legitimate farming, ensuring that these communities can thrive within the law.” #Securitynewsalert.com
