Nigeria Police Trains 192 Officers on Forensic Intelligence as Three Suspects Arrested for Cybercrimes

-

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in collaboration with Radio Tactics Group Limited, has completed a nationwide specialised capacity training program on the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS), equipping 192 officers with advanced digital forensic and intelligence-gathering skills.

The training, which ran from July 9 to August 15, 2025, drew participants from the 36 state commands, the Federal Capital Territory, and 10 specialized formations. It was designed to strengthen the Force’s ability to combat cyber-related crimes, particularly in intelligence extraction, digital forensics, and investigative operations.

Facilitated by experts from the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and Radio Tactics Group, the program covered threat identification, extraction and processing of communication and location data from SIM cards, GPS and satellite devices, grey-market mobile phones, biometric data capture, and the use of forensic hotlists to match intelligence with operational records. The NPF says the new skills will enhance its ability to respond swiftly and effectively to cybercrime and complex investigations nationwide.

In a related operation, the NPF-NCCC arrested three suspects identified as Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke in Abuja and Lagos for alleged cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud.

Investigators revealed that on July 18, 2025, the suspects hacked into a WhatsApp account, threatening to leak confidential data unless the victim paid ₦3 million. Forensic analysis not only led to their arrest and recovery of the compromised account but also uncovered a broader organised cybercrime network, now under investigation.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to adopting digitalised approaches in fighting cybercrime. He stressed the importance of continuous training and retraining of personnel in line with global best practices to tackle evolving digital threats.
